MISSION OF THE FBI NATIONAL ACADEMY
The mission of the FBI National Academy Program is to support, promote, and enhance
the personal and professional development of experienced law enforcement officers
by providing relevant education and training and to increase their information
networks in order to prepare them for increasingly complex and dynamic leadership
roles in the law enforcement community. The philosophy of the National Academy
program is a holistic one in that a healthy lifestyle and physical fitness are
stressed along with academic achievement.
National Academy Selection Criteria
Applicants must:
1. Apply through the FBI field offices or Legal Attaches.
2. Be at least 25 years of age (no maximum age)
3. Be a high school graduate or have an equivalency degree.
4. Have at least five years experience as a full-time, sworn police officer.
The experience must be substantially continuous.
5. Be nominated by the current head of the applicant's law enforcement agency.
An elected Sheriff may be self nominated. A Police Chief must be nominated by
the city/town manager or other authority to whom he/she reports.
6. Be of good character and reputation; pass a background investigation conducted
by the local FBI office.
7. Pass a medical/fitness exam and be certified by the Academy Health Services
Office as being fit for strenuous physical activity. Weight must be commensurate
with height or body fat standards must be met.
8. Serve at the rank of Lieutenant or above. The command structure of an agency
may warrant the consideration of an applicant at a lower rank.
9. Be sufficiently proficient in English to benefit from and contribute to the
National Academy.
10. Agree to remain in law enforcement for a minimum of three years following
graduation from the National Academy.
Application Process
Applicants for the FBI National Academy must complete an online application located
on the FBI Virtual Academy website. The FBI Virtual Academy website may be found
at https://fbiva.fbiacademy.edu, or Google "FBI Virtual Academy" for
the login link. The FBI Virtual Academy also has a help desk telephone number
for assistance, 703/632-3409.
Before applying to the National Academy in the FBI Virtual Academy, the applicant's
agency/department must first be validated by FBI Virtual Academy administrators.
Only the departmental Training Manager may register the agency in the Virtual
Academy by using the links noted above. Once the Training Manager has accessed
the website, he/she should complete the "Agency Application". After
the agency has been validated by the FBI Virtual Academy administrators, any
employee of that agency may use the Virtual Academy to apply to the National
Academy or register for FBI classes.
After completing the FBI National Academy application online, print and sign
the completed application. Attach a current passport size photo and forward to
the FBI, Little Rock Field Office, along with a copy of the Nomination of Law
Enforcement Officer (Form FD-164) and an original FBI Applicant fingerprint card
(fingerprint cards may be obtained by contacting Johnnie Beverley at 501/228-8439).

FBI National Academy Associates (FBINAA)
All graduates of the FBI National Academy have the opportunity to join the FBI
National Academy Associates, Inc. (FBINAA), a dynamic organization of more than
17,000 senior law enforcement professionals who have played a significant role
in developing a higher level of competency, cooperation, and integrity within
the law enforcement community.
ADDITIONAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT
NATIONAL EXECUTIVE INSTITUTE
This program is designed for Chief Executive Officers (Chiefs/Sheriffs) whose
departments/agencies maintain a staff of more than 500 sworn personnel and
serve a population exceeding 250,000. This program consists of three one week
courses which are held at various locations.
LAW ENFORCEMENT EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR (LEEDS)
This program is designed for Chief Executive Officers (Chiefs/Sheriffs) whose
departments/agencies maintain a staff of 50 or more sworn personnel and serve
a population of 50,000 or more. This program consists of one two week seminar
held at the FBI Academy, Quantico, Virginia.
POLICE EXECUTIVE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
This program offers an opportunity for law enforcement executives to provide
their expertise in areas which will mutually improve information and intelligence
sharing within the law enforcement community. The Fellowship Program involves
a six month assignment to the FBI Academy, Quantico, Virginia.
REGIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR (COMMAND COLLEGE)
The FBI Little Rock Field Office, in conjunction with the Criminal Justice
Institute, University of Arkansas System, sponsors one five day leadership
seminar for law enforcement executives serving in Arkansas. This program is
usually held in Little Rock each summer and is limited to 35 participants annually.
